Capturing Berlin's Soul: The Story of Notes of Berlin

"Notes of Berlin" is a blog by Joab Nist that captures Berlin's unique "note culture," where people leave handwritten notes around the city on various topics like love, jobs, and complaints. These notes serve as a raw, unfiltered look into the daily lives and concerns of Berliners. Nist, who moved from Munich to Berlin, saw these notes as a personal guide to the city and started the blog to give them a broader audience. The blog has gained a large following and offers a glimpse into what makes Berlin tick.

The Rise and Fall of Berlin's Pneumatic Post

The Berlin Pneumatic Post, an engineering feat, became the world's second-largest after Paris. By 1939, it had 90 offices linked by 12 lines over 400 kilometers, handling eight million items yearly. It used underground tubes to send pressurized capsules with letters. However, its decline was hastened by emerging telephone networks and electronic communication, which offered faster and more versatile means of information exchange. This shift rendered the pneumatic system obsolete, marking an end to this unique chapter in communication history.

Fabric of Time: Christo and Jeanne-Claude's Reichstag Wrap

The art project "Wrapped Reichstag" by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, realized in Berlin in 1995 after decades of preparation, involved covering the Reichstag building with silvery polypropylene fabric and blue ropes. Over 200 climbers and assembly workers installed the fabric panels in fourteen days, completely enveloping the building, with materials later recycled. Funded through the sale of the artists' works without public or private subsidies, this project symbolically represented democracy and the transience of materials.
